The Angels have spent so many games digging themselves an early hole and being unable to get out of it that they finally figured out that they could try doing it to other teams. Turns out it works!
Run Expectancy Rundown
Kole Calhoun had himself a day as every single Angels starter had at least one base hit. Perhaps the biggest thing of note though is who did NOT start. Raul Ibanez sat despite the Angels facing a right-hander and Howie Kendrick got the day off, partially so Grant Green could get some action. Part of me really thinks the Angels are finally giving serious thought to cutting the cord on Ibanez.
De Aza and Dunn both did some damage, primarily via the longball, though Dunn was good in general in the game. Fortunately, most of the rest of the lineup was on the negative side of the axis.
Starting Pitcher Scores
It wasn’t his most efficient outing, but Jered Weaver had some strong numbers in this one. You know things are going your way when guys are getting blown away by an 84 MPH fastball up in the zone. Andre Rienzo was decidedly terrible.
Bullpen Battle
This graph suggests the Angels bullpen had a good day, but they certainly did not. Joe Smith labored in his inning of work and Ernesto Frieri was fortunate to have been protecting such a big lead as he gave up a towering two-run homer to Adam Dunn and then a subsequent hit.
Game Flow
The Angels jumped out to an early lead but gave half it back pretty quickly. However, after that five-run inning, they had it in the bag. Then Ernesto Frieri tried to light the bag on fire, but even he can’t blow a six-run lead… right?
Halo Hero
With his first homer and third multi-hit game since coming off the DL, the quickly heating up Calhoun is our hero of the game.
