The July 3rd, 2014 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Trout name AL Player of the Month, sign Dominican OF Johan Sala and much more…
The Story: Mike Trout was named the AL Player of the Month.
The Monkey Says: Somehow this is only the second time he has won the award.
The Story: The Angels signed Dominican outfield prospect Johan Sala.
The Monkey Says: The Halos are back in the international prospect business for real it seems. Sala is supposedly a potential plus hitter and defender in center field, so he’ll certainly be worth keeping an eye on going forward.
The Story: David Carpenter was optioned to Double-A to make room for Tyler Skaggs on the active roster.
The Monkey Says: Carpenter only made one appearance in his time with the club.
The Story: Fernando Salas is likely to be activated from the DL today.
The Monkey Says: Either Rich Hill or Cory Rasmus will lose their roster spot as a result.
The Story: The Angels will use a six-man rotation for at least the next pass through the rotation.
The Monkey Says: It likely won’t last. At worst, this is just a way for them to get some guys rest and take one more look at Shoemaker and Santiago. At best, it is a way for them to line up the rotation the way they want it for the second half.
The Story: Jason Grilli and Ernesto Frieri ran into each other in the airport restroom in Chicago after they were traded for each other.
The Monkey Says: Awkward.
The Story: The Frieri-Grilli swap isn’t as big of a mistake as it might appear for the Angels.
The Monkey Says: I understand wanting to gamble on Grilli, but all signs point to Frieri being more likely to rebound to a high quality arm. I still don’t like that they gave away the extra value either.
The Story: Garrett Richards is in contention for an All-Star spot.
The Monkey Says: He seems to have a pretty good chance, but things get weird in the selection process and all the mandatory team representatives.
The Story: Re-drafting the 2011 draft class.
The Monkey Says: This has the Halos picking Wong instead of Cron, but I have a feeling that with the hindsight of the pitching depth issues in the farm system that they might opt for Glasnow.
