The July 11th, 2014 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including C.J. Wilson out 2-4 weeks with ankle sprain, Aybar named to All-Star team and much more…

The Story: C.J. Wilson has been placed on the disabled list with an ankle sprain and will be out 2-4 weeks.
The Monkey Says: The claim is that he suffered the injury right before he got yanked from his last start, so it isn’t to blame for his poor pitching. I guess that works. Either way, Wilson might benefit from the time off as it might allow him to figure out what was going wrong for him on the mound. Wilson might only miss on start thanks to the All-Star break.

The Story: Erick Aybar was named as Alex Gordon’s replacement to the All-Star team, but Garrett Richards fell short in the Final Vote.
The Monkey Says: Aybar deserves it so it was nice to see that a roster spot opened up. Richards deserves it too, but he will have to wait to see if someone else goes down or has to skip the game because they pitched on Sunday, which seems likely.

The Story: Cory Rasmus and Drew Rucinksi have been called up with Cam Bedrosian being sent back down.
The Monkey Says: Bedrosian was sent down simply because he’d pitched a few days in a row and was thus going to need a day or two off, so it made more sense to call up a fresh arm with the break looming. Rucinski is being added as a long man but is an impressive story since he was pitching in independent ball last year.

The Story: Nick Maronde was designated for assignment.
The Monkey Says: Maronde was once thought to be a top relief prospect for the Halos, but his control issues just keep getting worse. He’ll almost certainly clear waivers and stay with the club.

The Story: The Angels released Rich Hill.
The Monkey Says: Welp, so much for that. The Angels have Joe Thatcher now, so I guess they didn’t figure it was worthwhile to have Hill in the minors as an insurance policy.

The Story: Albert Pujols is now tied with Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 21st all-time in homers.
The Monkey Says: He’s at 512 now and the next guys on the list are Ted Williams, Frank Thomas and Willie McCovey at 521.

The Story: Josh Hamilton is seeing fewer fastballs than anyone in Pitch f/x history.
The Monkey Says: And he is not making contact with offspeed pitches at an even worse rate than ever, personally. He’s still putting up solid numbers now, but that is on the back of a .404 BABIP. This may not end well for Josh.

The Story: Mike Trout has the seventh-best selling jersey in baseball.
The Monkey Says: Well, at least he isn’t trailing Miguel Cabrera. Seriously though, what Yankee fan is only just now buying a Derek Jeter jersey? I don’t get it.

The Story: The mystery of the vanishing screwball.
The Monkey Says: Hector Santiago is featured in this, but the funny thing about this is that Santiago only throws the screwball once or twice a game. It isn’t as if it is his bread-and-butter pitch, though maybe it should be, especially if it isn’t a health risk as the doctors in the post seem to believe.

The Story: Scouting the 2014 Futures Game.
The Monkey Says: In case you wanted a quick snippet about Alfonso Alcantara.
