The Story: Breaking down the prospects the Angels got in exchange for Hank Conger.
The Monkey Says: Tropeano is the big catch in the deal. He isn’t a high ceiling guy, but he gives the Angels young rotation depth and might even be a bit of a sleeper. He’ll get a shot to compete for a rotation spot this spring if the Angels don’t acquire a more established starter. That is still very much in play despite this acquisition. Dipoto has been working hard to build depth and that is what this deal is about. The one hole it does create is at back-up catcher. Perez will get a look for that role, but that would be a huge risk, so expect a veteran to be added at some point.
The Story: The Angels acquired Cesar Ramos for prospect Mark Sappington.
The Monkey Says: Two trades in one day? Dipoto is always in a hurry in the offseason. Maybe that’s why this doesn’t feel like a great trade. Ramos is likely going to be the lefty out of the pen with the added bonus that he can be a longman too if need be. Giving up a live arm like Sappington, despite his immense control issues, seems like a steep price though. Why not save the prospect and sign a guy like Craig Breslow for the same salary that Ramos would pull?
The Story: Watch out for the Angels making a play for top Cuban prospect Yoan Moncada.
The Monkey Says: I swear, I had not intention of linking so heavily to Baseball America today, but it couldn’t be helped. Almost every team is going to be in on Moncada, so don’t get too excited yet, but it is a major talent infusion that could improve the Angels farm system in a big hurry.
The Story: Expect another offseason of free agent austerity for the Angels.
The Monkey Says: In the piece, Dipoto says to expect them to be more active on the trade market. He wasn’t kidding.
