It took a little longer than expected, but the Angels finally agreed to the Huston Street contract extension they’ve been negotiating for months. The LA Times reports that he’ll be getting a two-year deal worth $18 million:

That’s a nice deal for the Halos seeing how talks originally began with Street looking for a four-year deal betweeen $36 and $46 million. He was even asking them to tear up his 2015 contract as part of that deal. But with the season starting and Huston struggling a little bit out of the gate, he apparently softened his stance and agreed to this more team-friendly deal.
While it is more team-friendly, it isn’t entirely a win for Jerry Dipoto. Street now basically has three guaranteed years, which is a bit of a risk considering the 31-year old’s lengthy injury history and the general volatility in reliever performance. It also is a pretty high average annual value on par with the Andrew Miller contract but it is still below the AAV of the Robertson and Papelbon contracts of recent years. But with the deal trimmed down by a year from what Street wanted, the level of risk in the deal is more palatable and avoids the risk of Street hitting the market after the season and getting an even bigger offer that the Angels wouldn’t want to match or surpass.
