The June 10th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including recapping Day 2 of the draft, Freese has a hamstring injury and much more…

The Story: Recapping Day 2 of the draft for the Angels.
The Monkey Says: The Halos continued to focus on hitting and college players. Specifically, they were looking for players who were either OBP machines or highly athletic or both. The athleticism thing has been something the organization has been particularly vocal about needing to address, so we should probably expect more of the same in Day 3.

The Story: David Freese thinks he can avoid the DL after leaving last night’s game with a hamstring problem.
The Monkey Says: Even if he avoids the DL, it sounds like he is going to be out for the next bit. They could call up Kyle Kubitza to get his feet wet as he’s really the only other third baseman available. Grant Green can only be called up if they place Freese on the disabled list since he hasn’t been in the minors for ten days yet. I suppose Josh Rutledge is a possibility as well, but he doesn’t have much experience at the hot corner and he hasn’t been hitting in Salt Lake.

The Story: Why the Angels are excited about Taylor Ward.
The Monkey Says: The fact that they needed to explain says a lot about how well the pick was received. I can somewhat understand this selection, but my primary objection right now is that it doesn’t seem like they were aggressive enough to make use of the savings they surely created by drafting him so early. It will help with signing Jahmai Jones, but I had expected them to pick another tougher signability guy in Day 2 and they never really did.

The Story: Jamie Moyer talks about his son Hutton Moyer.
The Monkey Says: Hutton is now an Angel. I wonder if that pick was just made so they had an in with Jamie and will now ask him to mentor Jered Weaver on how to succeed with such low velocity.

The Story: Albert Pujols tied Mickey Mantle on the all-time home run list.
The Monkey Says: But you knew that already.

The Story: Mike Morin expanded his long toss program and hopes to return to the mound this weekend.
The Monkey Says: He’s making progress, but these oblique strains are tricky, so there just can’t be a timetable for his return yet.

The Story: Nick Tropeano is on the minor league disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis.
The Monkey Says: That takes a big wet bite out of their rotation depth, making it that much harder to #FreeAndrewHeaney.

The Story: Huston Street is the cerebral closer.
The Monkey Says: I was going to poke fun at this at first because Street has such a simplistic approach, but actually reading about how he arrived at that approach is quite interesting.
