The June 22nd, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Weaver to DL with hip inflammation, Angels minor league team cancels ‘Caucasian Heritage Night’ and much more…
The Story: Jered Weaver was placed on the disabled list with left hip inflammation.
The Monkey Says: Weaver claims it wasn’t responsible for his struggles, but the coaching staff seems to think otherwise. Jered also saw his velocity sharply drop off again three starts ago, so it certainly seems like there has been some real side effects to this injury. He will get an MRI this week to give a better idea of how long he will be out, but it sounds like the Angels are hoping like he will be back right after the All-Star break. With the way their off days are set up, they might only need a fifth starter once or twice. That figures to be Andrew Heaney, though it will require juggling the rotation a bit after their upcoming off day. If that doesn’t work out, it will be Drew Rucinski or Nate Smith getting the call up. For the time being, Alfredo Marte has been promoted to serve as bench depth.
The Story: Angels minor league affiliate Orem Owlz canceled their ill-advised Caucasian Heritage Night.
The Monkey Says: It is nice to see that being tone deaf to public relations extends all the way down the organizational ladder, too. This event was on the books for months, but it only just got attention last week when they started promoting it. They even had their play-by-play guy inform them what a bad idea this was and they ignored him, leading to his resignation over the weekend. Can the Angels please just try and go three weeks without creating a PR nightmare?
The Story: Mike Morin will begin his rehab assignment today.
The Monkey Says: And not a moment too soon. The Angels are desperate for consistent middle relief. While Morin wasn’t great early this season, he has a lot of upside and something of a track record of MLB success.
The Story: Trevor Gott could be the missing piece in the Angels bullpen.
The Monkey Says: Like I said, the Angels are looking for whatever they can find in middle relief. Gott only has a handful of appearances and already has seemingly become the seventh inning guy. When Rasmus and Morin get healthy, they will likely supplant him, but it looks to be his gig for now.
The Story: The new strategy for trying to get Mike Trout out.
The Monkey Says: Long story short, they might be trying to pitch him away now and it doesn’t seem to working. Back to the drawing board, rest of the world.
The Story: The father who raised an unlikely baseball dynasty.
The Monkey Says: This is an excerpt from Bengie Molina’s new book, talking about his own father. A bit of a long read, but a solid one.
