The June 29th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Angels trying to trade for a bat, Kubitza sent down and much more…
The Story: Jon Morosi reports that the Angels are looking to trade for a bat.
The Monkey Says: In other news, water is wet. He also states the obvious that they would prefer a left-handed hitter who can play left field or slot in as DH and that has OBP skills. Morosi offers no other details, so this isn’t really of much help other than confirming that the Halos are actively shopping. I actually thought that the bizarre closed door meeting before Sunday’s game was a precursor to a deal going down, but apparently it wasn’t. Nobody has really determined what that meeting was for though, so who knows.
The Story: Kyle Kubitza has been sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake.
The Monkey Says: Edgar Ibarra was also outrighted off the 40-man roster, so Cory Rasmus seems like a possible candidate for recall. However, that also means the Angels would be carrying 13 pitchers which seems unnecessary right now. This is for the best for Kubitza since Mike Scioscia wasn’t playing him for whatever reason. Now Kubitza will at least get regular at-bats.
The Story: Jered Weaver played catch with no problems.
The Monkey Says: Collin Cowgill is also expected to begin swinging a bat soon. Both are pretty much in a holding pattern of waiting for clearance to increase activity.
The Story: Taylor Featherston feels terrible about his errant throw that hit Robinson Cano in the head.
The Monkey Says: Cano turned out to be just fine, but it seems weird that a big league ballplayer could uncork such a bad throw during warm-ups. Then again, maybe Featherston probably shouldn’t be a big leaguer.
The Story: The Angels reminded Tyler Skaggs that they aren’t going to let him pitch in games this year.
The Monkey Says: He had been talking about trying to make that happen and apparently pushing himself too hard in bullpen sessions, so the team sat him down and eased up on his throwing program so that he didn’t over do it.
The Story: Matt Shoemaker is getting the timing of his delivery back and some extra velocity.
The Monkey Says: He was below 90 MPH the first month of the year and has been slowly building ever since, but his velo jumped all the way over 92 MPH in his last start. It certainly is promising, but let’s see if it lasts.
The Story: The Angels will need some help if they want to win the AL West.
The Monkey Says: And, yes, they still have a reasonable shot at winning the AL West. They really need to make a move soon to fortify the offense though if they want to make their move. They’ve cycled through all the internal candidates at least once and it just isn’t working. There is no doubt that they will do something, but the sooner they do it, the better.
The Story: Hector Santiago is amassing an impressive collection of signed jerseys and other memorabilia.
The Monkey Says: Honestly, it is refreshing to see a pro athlete who is still such a big fan of the game. A lot of these guys understandably end up treating it like a job, but Hector clearly appreciates how lucky he is.
The Story: The Angels have already signed all but one of their draft picks.
The Monkey Says: It looks like the one guy they won’t end up signing is the son of Jerry Dipoto. This post actually states that there are two other unsigned players, but they both agreed to deals over the weekend.
