We didn’t know it at the time, but this game may have been the departing gift of GM Jerry Dipoto who allegedly resigned last night. The embattled executive fittingly leaves the team on the heels of them getting four games over .500 for the first time all season and did so on the arm of Andrew Heaney, the top pitching prospect Dipoto acquired in a trade that was very unpopular with a certain segment of Angels fans. If this really is the end for Jerry, that’s a pretty good way to remind people of what they’ll be missing out on.

Matt Joyce also had the decency to put up a rare good game to send Dipoto off. Somehow Joyce outpaced Erick Aybar despite Aybar having a homer and a double. C.J. Cron had a miserable night, just in case anyone was thinking that his home run the night before meant that he suddenly fixed the myriad problems with his approach.

Andrew Heaney was downright terrific. He really just made the one bad pitch, but was masterful otherwise. He showed he could miss bats when he needed to and pitch to contact to induce the double play when he needed to. Thanks for this, Dipoto. Ivan Nova should be thanking the Angels bats for being so inept and letting him off the hook three different times in the early part of the game.
Bullpen Battle

Street and Smith were perfect despite both working three straight nights. Adam Warren was strong in relief, which I’m sure makes Yankees fans irate since he was unjustly forced into the bullpen.

The Angels whiffed on some chances early and then not much happened for awhile until Pujols and Aybar teamed up to be the Odd Couple of back-to-back homers.
