Second Guessing Scioscia – Mid-season report card

joejep

Welcome to Second Guessing Scioscia, our look back at some of the questionable decisions that Mike Scioscia made in the last week. And, boy, there are some questionable decisions to be reviewed. In the history of this column, we have never once struggled for content. However, we aren’t anti-Scioscia. The official MWAH stance on Scioscia is pro-Scioscia overall. But his in-game tactics need some help and we are here to provide that help by nitpicking incessantly and grading them with our patented SciosciaFace grading system.

In this week’s edition of Second Guessing Scioscia, I take a step back from the keyboard and let you do the Second Guessing. With Dipoto being judged so intensely as he makes his exit, I think it is only fair that we all judge Scioscia as well. Yep, I’m totally doing this to be fair and balanced and not because the Angels were involved in four blowouts this week and thus have nothing worth second guessing, as far as you know.

You make the call!
Yep, it is time for a good ol’ fashioned poll. I want you, yes you, to grade Scioscia on how well he’s performed his job this season so far (and just this season). That counts his in-game tactical decisions, his handing of the clubhouse, his dealings with the media and I suppose we should probably include his relationship with the front office.

As the second guesser-in-chief, I suppose I should give my own grade for Scioscia so as not to completely mail this post in. For me, it is a straight “C.” On one hand, he’s regressed back to some of his short-sighted smallball ways of too much sac bunting, too much lineup juggling and overly stringent bullpen roles. Plus he handled the Dipoto and Hamilton situations rather poorly. On the other hand, the clubhouse seems to have been entirely unaffected by all of this. They’ve hardly even seemed to be all that frustrated by their frustrating start to the season. Now they are playing their best baseball despite the organization being at peak turmoil, so he’s got to be doing something right. To me, that all cancels itself out.
