The July 17th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Weaver a week from returning, Street ready to roll, Angels still pursuing bats and much more…
The Story: Jered Weaver is still about a week away from returning.
The Monkey Says: He threw a simulated game yesterday, but apparently he needs another one. That means at least one more start for Matt Shoemaker to do something to make his move to the bullpen or Triple-A a tough decision.
The Story: Huston Street will throw a bullpen session tomorrow but feels he will be ready on Saturday.
The Monkey Says: It seems weird that he would be “ready” but still have to push back his bullpen session by a day. He seems pretty confident that he’ll get through the session with no problems though.
The Story: The Angels are still actively pursuing a trade for a hitter.
The Monkey Says: Prices remain too high for them, which is a line straight out of the first Stoneman era. The real tidbits from this post though are that the A’s have zero interest in trading Josh Reddick to the Angels and that the Halos also inquired on Ben Zobrist.
The Story: Jim Bowden believes the Angels will be a suitor for Justin Upton if he is made available.
The Monkey Says: Because he’s Jim Bowden, he fails to clarify whether or not that is based on a source or on his own speculation. This is your regular reminder that Jim Bowden is the worst.
The Story: Keith Law ranks Sean Newcomb as his #25 prospect.
The Monkey Says: Law likes him, but believes he tops out as a #2 starter and is perhaps a tiny bit behind on the development curve, which I imagine has a lot do with him coming from Hartford University.
The Story: Angel Stadium appears unlikely to bid to become a temporary home to a NHL team.
The Monkey Says: They are claiming there would be too many scheduling issues, which is kind of true, but teams have made it work before. I suspect they just don’t want to deal with the hassle or do anything that allows the city to make any extra money when the two sides are still fighting over renovations. If anything, they might be trying to use this as a bargaining chip.
The Story: PECOTA totally nailed their projection for Albert Pujols.
The Monkey Says: Bow before the prognostication powers of PECOTA.
The Story: Which Angels player will have his number retired next?
The Monkey Says: No answer is actually provided, but there are comments about how the Angels want to be very selective about retiring numbers. Sorry, Jorge Fabregas, it doesn’t look like it is ever going to happen for you.
The Story: Mid-season contact score leaders and laggards.
The Monkey Says: Mike Trout is very good at hitting baseballs it turns out.
