The August 24th, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news including Street calls out teammates, Tropeano optioned, Green recalled and much more…
The Story: Huston Street explains why he was yelling at the dugout when he came off the mound on Saturday.
The Monkey Says: Turns out he was pissed about the Angels losing in embarrassing fashion again. I for sure thought he was just upset about having to pitch in a non-save situation. Let’s be honest, it was probably both.
The Story: The Angels recalled Grant Green and optioned Nick Tropeano due to Johnny Giavotella’s illness.
The Monkey Says: Green was needed for infield depth, so Tropeano gets the short end of the stick. He’ll be back in September, but this almost assuredly means that Matt Shoemaker will be recalled to start on the 29th. You know things are bad when Mike Scioscia actually is forced to put Grant Green in the starting lineup instead of pretending he doesn’t exist.
The Story: Jon Heyman opines that Ned Colletti could be a candidate to be the next Angels GM.
The Monkey Says: That might be the worst possible person to hire, which is probably why Arte Moreno will do it and probably why I will be forced to convert this blog into Moose With a Trident.
The Story: David Freese began his rehab assignment on Sunday.
The Monkey Says: He’s going to start out DHing as his throwing isn’t fully there yet. That makes it unlikely that he’ll rejoin the team before rosters expand. Taylor Featherston began his rehab as well, but he can’t be activated until September 1st anyway.
The Story: C.J. Cron has busted his way out of his platoon role.
The Monkey Says: This is a good problem to have. Cron is one of the few guys going well right now and he was nominally platooning with David DeJesus who wasn’t hitting at all, so it was a pretty easy decision for Scioscia.
The Story: The Angels have reverted back to batting Calhoun leadoff and Trout in the two-hole.
The Monkey Says: They’ll stay that way for the foreseeable future because Scioscia only just now realized that having someone making a bunch of outs batting leadoff is a bad thing.
The Story: Josh Donaldson is giving Mike Trout a run for his money in the MVP race.
The Monkey Says: Donaldson is going to run away with it if Trout doesn’t get hot soon and the Angels continue to crater.
The Story: Mike Trout and Josh Donaldson bond through competition.
The Monkey Says: Maybe Trout is just looking for someone to give him some emotional support during all these drubbings that the Angels have been on the wrong end of.
The Story: Kaleb Cowart’s projection path shows how quickly things can change in baseball.
The Monkey Says: Kinda like how the Angels looked like they would coast into the postseason at the All-Star break and now look like they’ll be lucky to finish over .500?
The Story: Angel Molina and Jaime Barria are breakout Angels prospects in short-season ball.
The Monkey Says: Angel Molina must be a star for the Angels. With a name like that, he has no other choice.
