The March 17, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Trout being wrong about bat flips, Simmons sitting out yet another game, and more…
The Story: Mike Trout believes bat flips disrespect the game
MWAH Says: *SIGH* I suppose we can’t be surprised that someone whose idea of an invigorating conversation involves discussing the weather wouldn’t be cognizant of the exclusion that platitudes like “respect the game” and “be humble” inhabit and promote. Nonetheless, it still smarts. Trout is a joy to watch just as he is, but it doesn’t mean I can’t wish for him to adopt the looser approach of many of his peers. Bat-flipping isn’t about disrespect or showboating, it’s about gamesmanship—it’s about FUN.
The Story: Andrelton Simmons resting arm, kept off field
MWAH Says: Simmons reportedly has a minor case of what Mike Scioscia is calling “Spring Training arm,” which is totally legit and scientific. I’ll believe it’s minor when Simmons is back playing the field every day. Until then I’m going to keep breathing into this paper bag.
The Story: Nick Buss opens eyes in Angels camp
MWAH Says: Were they closed before? Because that would make it significantly more difficult to play baseball at any level, let alone professionally. For reals, though, Buss is having a nice spring, and I hope he eventually gets a shot in Anaheim. But as a 29-year-old with just eight games of MLB experience, his odds of usurping Craig Gentry, Rafael Ortega, and Todd Cunningham on the depth chart aren’t great. Keeping his eyes open should help, though.
The Story: Low expectations take pressure off Angels in spring training
MWAH Says: It does seem a bit of a weird for the Halos to be underdogs entering a season, but it really wasn’t *that* long ago they were projected to be not very good. In 2011, they were projected for just 78 wins. They won 86.
The Story: The Angels opening day lineup in anagram form
MWAH Says: Some pretty great ones in here. Baloney Curse and Craps El Zero are personal favorites.
The Story: Yasiel Puig not suspended for role in Miami bar fight
MWAH Says: The second of three domestic-abuse cases MLB is investigating has come to a close. No evidence could be found to corroborate TMZ’s allegation that Puig hit his sister. He did definitely get in a spat with a bouncer at the bar, but that doesn’t fall under the auspices of the new policy.
