The April 11, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes C.J. Wilson being cleared to start throwing again, an old friend getting claimed on waivers, and more…
The Story: C.J. Wilson to restart throwing program on Monday
MWAH Says: Wilson will again try taking the first step in his recovery from a shoulder injury. If he isn’t shut down for a third time and he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, he could be back with the team sometime next month. I’m not holding my breath.
The Story: Angels claim RHP Danny Reynolds off waivers
MWAH Says: Figured this might happen. Reynolds was on the Angels’ 40-man roster at the start of the winter, but was placed on waivers to make room for offseason acquisitions. After bouncing between the Dodgers and Astros, Reynolds found himself on waivers yet again over the weekend. The Angels had a couple open spots on the roster and a spot in the bullpen up for grabs, so it made sense to bring the hard-throwing right-hander back. Reynolds will report to Double-A Arkansas.
The Story: Angels option Cam Bedrosian to Triple-A, recall A.J. Achter
MWAH Says: This was a Saturday afternoon move. Bedrosian may have blown his last chance to be an integral part of the Angels bullpen. He was erratic in both his appearances the first week, walking three and throwing two wild pitches. Yes, the bullpen was overworked and needed reinforcements, but that doesn’t typically lead to one of the freshest arms being optioned. Achter threw a scoreless inning in Saturday’s loss.
The Story: Angels shifting more than any club in baseball
MWAH Says: Shifting more than everyone else doesn’t necessarily mean they’re shifting more effectively than everyone else. So far, batters are hitting .315 when the Angels shift, vs .246 when they don’t. Kind of the opposite of how that’s supposed to go.
The Story: How Jered Weaver sent a message
MWAH Says: Ooo, I know this one. By snail mail? Telegraph? Wells Fargo wagon? Really, though, Weaver was great Sunday and should pitch all of the Angels’ home day games. He won’t, of course, so this weekend in Minnesota should be interesting.
The Story: Tyler Skaggs throws 42 pitches in first Triple-A start
MWAH Says: Skaggs wasn’t as sharp as he was against the Dodgers in the Freeway Series, but it’s still a big step in the right direction. He’ll likely be stretched out to 90 or so pitches before getting the call back to Anaheim, so he’ll probably need three or four more starts with Salt Lake. On regular rest, that’d set him up to make his 2016 debut the first week of May.
The Story: Luis Jimenez is playing in Korea now, faceplants on home run trot
MWAH Says: I had no idea Lucho wasn’t toiling away on a Triple-A club somewhere. He’s been with the LG Twins since early last year, apparently, and is hitting a solid .367/.387/.733 through seven games so far this season. Pretty strong numbers for a guy who’s obviously struggling with gravity.
