This year the Bloguin Heisman Poll will be hosted and organized by our friends over at College Football Zealots. Nittany Lion’s Den is a voting member of the poll and I’ll be sharing our ballot with you each week. Be sure to check out College Football Zealots for the updated poll when it is available to see where these players stand and what everyone else is thinking.
1. Robert Griffin III, Baylor Quarterback
I knew TCU was going to be a bit of a question mark, but Baylor’s dynamic quarterback exploded all over the Horned Frogs for 359 yards while completing 77.8% of his passes. It was the first time TCU has allowed 40 points to be scored against them since 2005 and I’m not sure why TCU seemed so unprepared for Griffin. I still want to see RGIII play well against the better competition later in the season before he becomes a legitimate favorite for the Heisman, but his week one performance against TCU certainly merits recognition this week.
2. Robert Woods, USC Wide Receiver
Woods caught 17 passes against Minnesota for 177 yards and three touchdowns. Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon received the majority of the pre season hype among wide receivers, but Woods is pretty darn good too. He averaged 10.4 yards per catch, which is most among the handful of receivers with at least 15 receptions in week one.
3. Andrew Luck, Stanford Quarterback
I’m trying to limit my choices to the guys who had the best performance on the field, but I have to include the guy I believe is going to be the favorite by the end of the season. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck passed for 171 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for just nine more yards on the ground. These are pedestrian numbers for a guy like Luck but I have a feeling most coaches in college football would take those numbers over what they currently have.
