Some fans will wear black shoes this weekend to honor
former head coach Joe Paterno.

The tributes for Joe Paterno continue to be developed, whether officially or unofficially. This weekend’s spring game will be the first game played inside Beaver Stadium since the passing of Joe Paterno, and some fans will be taking the opportunity to pay their respects one more time for the coaching legend.

As I wrote this morning on Examiner.com, a small group on Facebook is organizing to attempt to have fans pay tribute to the former Penn State coach, asking fans attending the Blue White Game to wear black shoes. More specifically, the group is encouraging fans to wear the shoe Paterno was most known to wear on game day, a Nike men’s air court leader low basketball shoe.

If you are attending this weekend’s spring game, or if you are attending a viewing party instead, will you be sporting some black shoes to join in the tribute? I am not sure how far-reaching this movement is, with only 123 Facebook fans as of the original story being posted, but I would imagine there will be some who wear black sneakers to join in the tribute on Saturday.

Meanwhile we continue to wait and see just what other, formal tributes are ahead for Paterno. Plans to change street names or perhaps the playing field inside Beaver Stadium have been among the most notable ideas thrown out there, and appear to be the most likely to develop as time goes by. Penn State has said they will plan to honor Paterno at some point, and I suspect they will do so appropriately in coordination with the family, who still supports the university and football program despite the tension between the two over the past few months.
