With strong family ties to Penn State, the Nittany Lions were always one of Richie Anderson’s favorites.
If there were any doubts, though, Saturday night’s white house atmosphere sealed the deal.
The Frederick, Md. native told Penn State coaches Sunday that he will be attending the school and enrolling in January.
Anderson’s father, also Richie, was a standout running back at Penn State and had a significant 10-year career in the National Football League. At Penn State Anderson rushed for 1,761 yards and also had 353 receiving yards.
The younger Anderson is a 5-foot, 11-inch, 180-pounder who plays at Thomas Johnson High and has been labeled as a three-star prospect by several of the national recruiting services.
Anderson actually committed to Maryland in June and as recently as late August, re-affirmed his commitment to the Terrapins.
Saturday night, though, provided an atmosphere that was too much to pass up.
In addition to Penn State and Maryland, he had offers from Boston College, Illinois, East Carolina, Rutgers, Temple and Wake Forest. There was also interest from the likes of Duke, Pitt and Tennessee.
Anderson’s high school team earned a 24-22 Friday night to improve its record to 4-5 on the season.
