The battle to see which program is more elite will finally be settled. In ten years.
It almost seems as though it was a mistake that Penn State and Virginia Tech have never played each other in college football, but that will all be corrected in about ten years with the two programs setting up a home-and-home series. Penn State will play on the road in Blacksburg, Virginia on September 17, 2022 and Virginia Tech will make a return trip to Beaver Stadium on September 16, 2013.
Virginia Tech is the only opponent on Penn State's schedules for 2022 and 2023, but it is good to lock down a series like this in advance, which seems to be the practice for larger programs.
Penn State will be continuing to have games against ACC opponents throughout the coming years. This season kicks off against new ACC member Syracuse and a four-game set with Pittsburgh commences in 2016, followed by a home-and-home with Syracuse in 2020 and 2021 before the Virginia Tech series. Penn State was supposed to wrap up a home-and-home series with Virginia this season in Beaver Stadium, but that game continues to be held up in limbo awaiting further details. Penn State has no schedule vacancies either of the next two seasons unless they move another game.
There had been talks this off-season about the possibility of having Penn State renew a series with West Virginia at some point. West Virginia has been trying to reunite on the field with some of the older regional rivals such as Penn State, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech to help balance their schedule geography as a member of the Big 12. As of right now, there is no update on any series with the Mountaineers to build off of but just keep that in mind.
