The Heisman Trophy has seen a recent trend of underclassmen quarterbacks taking home college football’s most notable individual award. Could Penn State sophomore Christian Hackenberg follow up his impressive freshman debut in the Big Ten with a ride to New York?
College Football Talk included Hackenberg in a list of potential Heisman Trophy candidates for the 2014 season. Here is what was said about Penn State’s starting quarterback;
One of just two true sophomores on this list, Hackenberg flourished under QB guru Bill O’Brien. With O’Brien off to the NFL, how will Hackenberg handle new head coach James Franklin and an entirely different offensive system? Based on watching a kid who just oozes talent and confidence, I’m guessing he’ll adapt just fine, thank you very much.
Penn State has just one Heisman Trophy winner in school history (John Cappelletti in 1973), although there have been a handful of finalists over the years (Kerry Collins, Ki-Jana Carter, Larry Johnson). I don’t think Hackenberg is going to New York this season, but he will certainly be in the conversation if he gets off to a solid start this season.
Note: Although I write for College Football Talk, I had nothing to do with this particular list.
