Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop has been nominated for the Broyles Award. The award goes to the nation’s top assistant coach in college football. No Penn Sate assistant coach has won the award since it was first introduced in 1996.

Shoop’s case will have some legs to stand on considering how well Penn State’s defense has played this season. Shoop is one of six Big Ten assistants on the list of 40 nominees for this year’s award. Four of the last five Broyles Award winners have been a defensive coordinator. Perhaps one last good showing by the defense at home this weekend against Michigan State could help give one final push to the finalist stage for the award.

Last year’s Broyles Award winner was Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi. This year’s winner will be announced December 9.
