With Crook leaving for an FCS program, he will be eligible to play right away in 2015. Crook clearly was not going to get much playing time at Penn State ahead of Christian Hackenberg, so a chance to get some playing time could be in the works at Albany.
Crook’s transfer leaves Penn State with just three quarterbacks on the current roster, with Hackenberg and freshmen Trace McSorely and Billy Fessler. Michael O’Connor elected to transfer out of the program prior to the Pinstripe Bowl, but it is still unknown where he is heading. Penn State will add quarterback Tommy Stevens to the roster this spring, but that may be all for the quarterback position until the Class of 2016. Penn State currently has a verbal commit from Class of 2016 pro-style quarterback Jake Zembiec out of New York. Zembiec is a three-star prospect on the 247 Sports composite ranking. It would not be a surprise at this point to see Franklin and his staff continue to evaluate quarterback options in the Class of 2016.
Crook served as Hackenberg’s backup, but only saw a small number of snaps this season. In 2015, it seems clear that once again the health of Hackenberg could be key. The offensive line, of course, will take that responsibility in the fall.
With Crook on his way to Albany, it is time to fire up the list of quarterbacks to transfer from Penn State since the 2008 season.
- Pat Devlin (2008, Delaware)
- Kevin Newsome (2011, Temple)
- Rob Bolden (2012, LSU, then to Eastern Michigan)
- Paul Jones (2012, Robert Morris)
- Steven Bench (2013, USF)
- Tyler Ferguson (2014, Louisville)
- Austin Whipple (2014, UMass)
- Michael O’Connor (2015, TBD)
- D.J. Crook (2015, Albany)
