Stewart Reaches Base in School-Record 58th Straight Game

History was made in Florida State’s series opener with Wake Forest on Friday night. While the Seminoles opened the meaningful series in Winston-Salem with a 7-1 victory, sophomore outfielder D.J. Stewart set a new school-record by reaching base in his 58th straight game.

After an 0-for-3 start, Stewart’s run at history looked very much in doubt. With the Seminoles clinging to a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Stewart laced a single to center to plate a pair of runs. Stewart’s hit gave FSU a 5-1 lead and broke the record of 57 games, previously held by Florida State great and current St. Louis Cardinals’ outfielder, Shane Robinson. FSU would add two more in the inning on another two-run single — this time from first baseman John Nogowski.

Stewart entered the series tied for the ACC lead in home runs, second in batting average and fifth in RBIs. Stewart’s record may have come sooner had it not been for a four-game suspension issued earlier in the year for Stewart’s role in a benches-clearing altercation with rival Florida.

Friday’s win in Winston-Salem gives the Seminoles a four-game lead over Wake Forest in the Atlantic division. Clemson moves into second place in the division at 3 1/2 games back of Florida State.
