Florida State’s first appearance in the Women’s College World Series in 10 years was a brief one as the Seminoles were eliminated by 13th-seed Baylor on Saturday afternoon. The Lady ‘Noles opened the College World Series on Thursday with a 3-0 loss to top-seed Oregon.
In Thursday’s loss, FSU had no answer for Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins. Not only was Florida State blanked, it was held to just one hit. Maddie O’Brien’s leadoff single in the first inning accounted for the only hit of the day for FSU as the Lady ‘Noles totaled just three base-runners for the afternoon.
Against a Baylor team that was also shutout in its Women’s College World Series opener on Thursday, the Seminoles were eliminated with a 7-2 loss.
Jordan Strickland’s two-run home run in the second inning paced Baylor to a 3-0 lead and the Lady Bears never looked back. Strickland would add a second two-run homer in the sixth inning.
After being shut out for their first 11 innings of the Women’s College World Series, the Seminoles pushed a pair of runs across in the fifth inning. Briana Hamilton’s two-run single scored O’Brien and Alex Kossoff to give Florida State life, but Baylor would get the pair of runs back in the next half inning.
Despite the loss on Saturday, Florida State’s softball program had a year to be proud of. FSU was able to top Notre Dame for the ACC title before rallying from its worst NCAA Tournament loss ever to take the final two games against Michigan in the Super Regionals.
The appearance in the Women’s College World Series was the first for Florida State since 2004. FSU fans should be hopeful that 2014 was just the beginning. The Lady ‘Noles finish the season with a record of 55-9.
