While Kelvin Benjamin starred in his NFL debut for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of September 1st through the 7th once again comes on the diamond. For the fifth time this season, the honor goes to San Francisco Giants’ catcher Buster Posey.
In six games this week for San Francisco, Posey posted a stellar .565 batting average with two home runs, eight RBIs and as many runs scored. Prior to an 0-for-2 effort in a loss to Milwaukee on Sunday, Posey had five straight multi-hit games including a trio of three-hit games.
After Posey’s solid week, the San Francisco catcher now finds himself in the thick of the race for the National League batting title. Posey’s .309 average for the season ranks fourth in the National League, just seven points behind Colorado’s Justin Morneau for the league lead.
Posey leads the Giants in average, home runs, RBIs and OPS and is a big reason why San Francisco currently holds the top wild card spot in the National League.
