Very few former Florida State athletes were in action this week, but the ones who were made an impact. The Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of January 5th through the 11th comes from the NFL as rookie Kelvin Benjamin takes home the honors for the third time this season.
Though his rookie season came to an end on Saturday, the Carolina Panthers’ receiver finished with seven catches for 75 yards receiving and two touchdowns — all team-highs — in a 31-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Divisional playoffs. Benjamin scored touchdowns from 7 and 15 yards out and nearly hauled in a third one on a spectacular play, but was ruled just out of bounds.
During the regular season, Benjamin tied for the team-lead with 1,008 yards receiving and led the squad with 9 touchdown receptions. Former Florida State players accounted for all 17 of the Panthers’ points on Saturday as kicker Graham Gano added two PATs and a field goal to go along with Benjamin’s two scores.
