In this week’s installment of “Share Your Seminole Story”, we asked our fans and readers what was their favorite upset ever pulled by Florida State.
From the Staff
For most of my life, Florida State has been a powerhouse — at least on the gridiron. I wasn’t around for the great early upsets pulled by Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles like the 1980 victory in Lincoln, Nebraska or the 1982 victory over Ohio State in Columbus, but when I think about great upsets pulled by FSU, one game immediately comes to mind.
The year was 2005 and the Seminoles were set to take on No. 5 Virginia Tech in the inaugural ACC Championship in Jacksonville. Florida State was just 7-4 and had lost three games in a row coming in. The Seminoles were a 14-point underdog, which made for prime conditions for a monumental upset.
The game was tied 3-3 at halftime, but Willie Reid’s 86-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter served as the catalyst for a 24-0 FSU spurt. The Hokies scored three fourth quarter touchdowns against soft coverage, but when all was said and done, the Seminoles were 27-22 winners and ACC champions for the 12th time in 15 years.
The victory not only made Florida State champions, but it salvaged a dismal end to the regular season. Unfortunately, we FSU football fans would have to wait another seven years to regain the title of ACC champions.

For me, this has to be a basketball experience as in football, we have always been solid (my parents generation may disagree) and baseball plays too many games. I actually have two from my senior year. The first is against North Carolina, beating them in OT in 2004. Rashad McCants was destroying us and we were losing badly when we started to make a comeback and eventually beat them in OT. But I clearly remember the atmosphere and having to put the ball-boys I was in charge of in a protected place for the court storming. Later that same season, we would play Georgia Tech and give them their worst margin of defeat, 81-65. I was close enough to hear coach Paul Hewitt berate the players letting them know how they quit. Both teams would eventually play for national championships (Georgia Tech-’04, UNC-’05 winner).

@Noled_Out Rooster beating UF in 98. Followed closely by the 1996 win that drove Spurrier to a series of tantrums rivaling any 2 year old.

This one’s a tie, but no tie has ever felt so much like a victory.
