It was another 3-1 week for Florida State as the Seminoles downed rival Florida in Jacksonville before taking two of three from N.C. State. The week for FSU however, may not have been as good had it not been for a dominant pitching performance on Friday night.
The Florida State Baseball Player of the Week for the week of March 30th through April 5th is freshman pitcher Drew Carlton, who is coming off the best outing of his young career.
In Florida State’s 1-0 win over N.C. State on Friday night, Carlton was absolutely brilliant. Carlton allowed just four hits in eight shutout innings while fanning four Wolfpack hitters. Carlton issued one walk and hit a batter as he collected the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The stellar outing marked the second of four starts this season in which Carlton did not give up a run. He threw five shutout innings in a 24-1 victory over South Florida on March 3rd.
For the season, Carlton has an ERA just above four, but gave the Seminoles a big lift this week with ace Mike Compton still nursing an abdominal injury. Carlton has shown good command this year with a 6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Carlton will likely get another start as FSU plays five games this week. The Seminoles will host a 2-game set against Florida Gulf Coast before traveling to face Notre Dame for a weekend series starting on Friday.
