Pitching was not easy to find for Florida State during its Super Regional visit to Gainesville, but for one former Seminole, this past week saw his best outing of the year.

The Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of June 1st through the 7th is Triple-A pitcher John Gast.

A former starter at FSU, Gast was outstanding for the Memphis Redbirds in a 1-0 victory over the Las Vegas 51s on Friday. Gast threw seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk to earn the victory.

For Gast, who pitches for the St. Louis Cardinals’ affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, it was also his longest outing of the season. Gast is 2-3 on the year with a 4.56 ERA.

For a Detroit Tigers’ Class-A Affiliate, Gage Smith threw five shutout innings in two appearances this past week. Smith earned the win in each of them and allowed just two total hits and no walks.
