Florida State scored an opening drive touchdown and the defense did the rest on Friday night as the Seminoles defeated Boston College 14-0 at Alumni Stadium in the ACC opener for both teams.

FSU quarterback Everett Golson capped an 8-play, 83-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Travis Rudolph to give the Seminoles the early 7-0 lead. Florida State (3-0, 1-0 ACC) had an opportunity to extend that lead to 10-0 late in the second quarter, but junior kicker Roberto Aguayo missed a field goal from 42 yards out — just the fifth miss of his career.

The 7-point lead for FSU stood until the final quarter. With 12:20 to play, the Seminoles seized control as FSU linebacker Terrance Smith stripped Boston College running back Jon Hilliman and cornerback Jalen Ramsey recovered the fumble and raced 36 yards for a touchdown and the game’s final score.

Florida State managed only 217 yards on offense on the night, but still outgained Boston College (2-1, 0-1 ACC), who was held to 195 yards of total offense. One week after rushing for 266 yards, FSU sophomore running back Dalvin Cook was held to 54 yards rushing on 15 carries. FSU wide receiver Kermit Whitfield led all players with 71 yards from scrimmage including 52 receiving.

The Seminoles rushed for just 98 yards while the Eagles went only 5-for-15 passing for 56 yards on the evening. One week after being ejected, Florida State senior safety Lamarcus Brutus recorded an interception. Boston College quarterback Darius Wade left the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury.

The 14-0 victory is the first FSU shutout since beating Maryland 63-0 in 2013 and the first road shutout since blanking Notre Dame 37-0 in November of 2003. The 14 points for the Seminoles are the fewest in a victory since besting Miami 13-10 in the 2006 opener.

With Friday’s win, FSU improved to 6-0 against Boston College under head coach Jimbo Fisher. Florida State will have more than two weeks to prepare for a trip to Wake Forest on October 3rd. Boston College will be home for the fourth straight week when it faces Northern Illinois next Saturday.
