In just two short years Robert Marroquin, 2009 North Texas Fisticuffs Fighter of the Year, has risen from talented local prospect, to standing on the cusp of mainstream popularity. The undefeated Oak Cliff native has quietly taken the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex by storm with his action packed style and humble demeanor. Fortunately for Marroquin, a full time college student, the rest of the boxing world seems to be taking notice as well.
Thursday afternoon, Marroquin held his first ever media day at the Maple Ave Boxing Gym in downtown Dallas. Marroquin is in preparation for his biggest fight to date, a showdown with fellow Dallas native Sammy Sanchez on the undercard of the much anticipated Manny Pacquiao – Joshua Clottey showdown taking place March 13 at Cowboys Stadium.
A number of local media and industry insiders were on hand to watch Marroquin do a couple of rounds of bag work and conduct one-on-one interviews. Noticeable former fighters in attendance included former middleweight title challenger “Big Sugar” Ray Phillips, and former featherweight contender James Martinez.
North Texas Fisticuffs had a chance to speak with Marroquin about his big fight March 13 at Cowboys Stadium. Video below:
