Jones, dos Santos Win Big on UFC on Versus 1 Sunday Night

Light Heavyweight Fight – Sunday at Broomfield, CO
Jon “Bones” Jones (10-1) TKO 1 Brandon “The Truth” Vera (11-5)
Official time of stoppage: 3:19 in round one.

Jon Jones has quickly become a fan favorite within the Octagon with his videogame style repertoire of strikes and slams.  But while Jones has enjoyed fan adulation, detractors pointed to his lack of competition through his first ten fights for the UFC.  This all changed Sunday night as Jones stopped the heralded Brandon Vera within one round on the headline bout of UFC on Versus 1.  For all the great striking, and BJJ skills possessed by Vera, Jones was in complete control throughout the fight.  Smothering Vera with his vaulted wrestling skills Jones was able to posture up, and with right elbow thrown from the depths of hell, rained pain upon the head of Vera prompting Herb Dean to stop the fight.

It was a great showing by Jones who may have stamped his ticket to the higher profile fights at light heavyweight.  A battle between Jones and the loser of Rampage Jackson-Rashad Evans would be a helluva fight.

Heavyweight Fight
Junior dos Santos (11-1) KO 1 Gabriel Gonzaga (11-5)
Official time of knockout: 3:53 in round one

Junior dos Santos continues to show why he is wildly considered a beast in the heavyweight division.  In facing Gonzaga, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist, dos Santos punched his ticket from prospect to title contender.  After some tentative opening minutes, dos Santos clipped Gonzaga with a counter left hook that put the giant Brazilian on his back.  Dos Santos wasted little time in seizing the opportunity, and after raining down some heallacious punches the fight was stopped when Gonzaga’s body went limp.

Dos Santos has quickly made a name for himself in the popular heavyweight division, and it will be interesting to see what is next for the fighter.  A fight with wresters Shane Carwin, or Cain Velasquez could produce some excellent fireworks.
