Heavyweight Fight
Lavar Johnson (14-3) TKO 2 Lolohea Mahe (4-1-1)
Official time of stoppage: 3:29 in round two.
Just eight months ago, Lavar Johnson was embattled in the fight of this life having been the victim of a random shooting at a family reunion in Bakersfield, CA. Miraculously, Johnson survived, and Friday night he did the improbable, knocked out a rugged and game Lolohea Mahe in the main event of Stikeforce Challengers 7 at the Savemart Center in Fresno, CA.
After some explosive moments in the first round, the action peaked in the second with Johnson landing some big bombs to the dome of Mahe. As Mahe wearily backed up against the cage, Johnson sucked it up and unleashed a bombastic attack of hard shots that left Mahe a bloody mess and out of the fight. A solid win for Johnson who still needs work on his conditioning, but can give hell to any heavyweight in the game.
Light Heavyweight Fight
Ron Humphrey (7-1) SUB 1 (Guillotine Choke) George Bush III (5-2)
Time of submission: 1:44 in round one.
This fight seemed to be over before it really began. After being taken down by Bush, Humphrey would regroup to get back on his feet. Bush then attempted to shoot for the takedown again, but Humphrey was ready and caught Bush coming in with the guillotine. It was an Humphrey’s first win by submission, but it’s clear that both fighters need some seasoning before they are ready for the upper echelon light heavyweights.
Welterweight Fight
Andre Galvao (4-1) SD 3 Luke Stewart (6-3)
Scores: 30-27, 27-30, 29-28
This was as close a fight as you are going to see with nip tuck action throughout. In the end Galvao seemed to earn the decision based upon his ability to control the ground game. Close fight, one that I had Stewart winning by a point, but these you can’t complain on the outcome.
135 LBS Women’s Division Fight
Miesha Tate (9-2) SUB 2 (Armbar) Zoila Frausto (5-1)
Time of submission: 4:09 in round two.
Miesha Tate made good on her nickname, “Takedown”, utilizing superior grappling to thoroughly control the muay thai skills of Frausto. Though you have to give credit to Frausto for giving her all, and shedding a number of submission attempts, but let’s not kid ourselves, this fight was all Tate. Arguably, you will not find a more grueling ground fighter in the game and the armbar that Tate slapped on Frausto was bone snapping tight.
160 LBS Catch-weight Fight
Justin Wilcox (9-3) UD 3 Shamar Bailey (10-2)
Scores: 30-27, 30-27, 30-27
My partisan rooting for Naptown native Bailey, Wilcox dominated this fight. The “Silverback” came out the gate fighting, cutting Bailey over the right eye early on. The cut seemed to affect Bailey who became overly tentative over the next fifteen minutes. The result was a Wilcox who was undaunted in dominating the fight from corner to corner.
