When Fort Worth’s Durwyn Lamb made his professional boxing debut in September he did so under less than ideal situations. Having to take the fight on short notice, cutting over 20 pounds, and nursing an injured shoulder from a car accident Lamb fought commendably against Jerome Sustaija, a noted amateur trained under Ann Wolfe. Though he dropped a majority decision to Sustaija, Lamb was determined to get his professional career on the right path.
This past Saturday night Lamb made exorcised the demons of his first fight with a scintillating knockout of Damon Philips of Midland. The fight took place on the undercard of the Wolfe Pack Promotions boxing card in Bastrop, TX.
Unlike his first fight, Lamb did not have the struggles of weight cutting, short notice, or unsolicited bullsh*t to contend with in this training camp. This was clearly evident as a fit and trim Lamb stepped on the scales 5 ½ pounds under the contracted weight limit. But the true evidence of Lamb’s ideal training camp came moments into the first round against Philips. Philips came out the gate winging wild shots and looked to make things uncomfortable for Lamb. However, this soon backfired as Lamb, settling in to the groove of the fight, unleashed a compact straight left hand that put Philips on the canvas. Rising on wobbly legs, Philips bravely tried to fight on but his courage was met with a follow up barrage of shots by Lamb, punctuated with a crisp hook that put Philips on his back, and out of the fight.
The official time of the knockout was 1:01 in round one. Legendary fighter Ann Wolfe, the promoter of the night’s card, exclaimed that Lamb had the knockout of the night. On a card that featured six bouts ended before the scheduled number of rounds, that was high praise indeed.
