Locally, people speak of Dallas’ Will Campuzano in almost revered tone. Truth be told, it’s hard not to. Blessed with a dazzling array of offensive firepower to go along with an extremely humble demeanor, well, it’s hard not to root for bantamweight.
Last year Campuzano was called up to the now-merged WEC. Though he dropped two of his three contests in the blue cage, in each and every showing Campuzano did not fail to impress critics with his tenacity and lion heart. All of which is exactly why the UFC scooped him up following their merger with the WEC.
This past Saturday night Campuzano made his UFC debut on the undercard of The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale. Standing across the cage from him was fellow WEC transplant Nick Pace. Pace, who missed the bantamweight limit by three pounds, was taken to task early on by the fleet footed Campuzano. However, things soon turned dicey for Campuzano when he was submitted by a very creative submission mere seconds from the end of the fight. The move, dubbed the “Pace Choke,” basically consisted of Pace locking his right leg behind Campuzano’s neck and reaching under Campuzano’s neck with right arm. Pace’s left arm then was used to pull down his leg and thus initiate the choke.
The official time of the submission was 4:33 in round three. With the win Pace improves his record to 6-1, while Campuzano drops to 7-3.
