If you have followed our site for any length of time then you undoubtedly know that we consider Randy Villarreal one of North Texas’ most respected young prospects. The MMA prodigy has begun to amass quite a name for himself following a string of spectacular victories within the last few months. However, Villarreal’s biggest fight to date took place this past weekend in the very non-descript town of Ponca City, Oklahoma. It was there, on the undercard of the Cowboy MMA promotion at the Hutchins Memorial Auditorium that Villarreal would tangle with IFL and Bellator veteran fighter Zach George.
We here at North Texas Fisticuffs managed to catch up with Villarreal last week just days prior to his showdown with George and if anything, you could sense a samurai-like serenity radiating from the young fighter. An unmistakable air of confidence surrounded Villarreal who seemed to care little for the many accomplishments of George.
Funny how this would be a precursor for things to come.
Villarreal, who gets his roll on at Genesis BJJ and his striking under the tutelage of Phalanx’s Durwyn Lamb, entered into the cage a huge underdog to George’s professional record of 18-4. However, in warrior fashion Villarreal took the fight to George and secured an armbar that forced the Team Quest trained fighter to tap in the first round.
Make no mistake, this was the biggest fight of Villarreal’s career and should he continue to dominate fighters of George’s caliber expect the big promotions to come calling.
Other Local Fighters Make Noise at Cowboy MMA
Villarreal was not the only DFW-based fighter representing North Texas in Ponca City this past Saturday. Dallas’ Hayward Charles who scored a first round triangle choke over Southlake’s Steve Hess. Also, UFC vet and Team Takedown fighter Jake Rosholt secured an arm triangle that forced John Malbrough to tap in the opening round.
