North Texas Fisticuffs became North California Fisticuffs during the extended weekend as your local neighborhood combative sports blogger headed back home to the Golden State for spell. Fortunately, we are back in action here at NTF and even though our beloved site was on a bit respite, we are back on the grind.
A trio of North Texas pugilists were in action this past Memorial Day weekend. While the results of their endeavors were mixed, the undisputable fact is that each came to the ring and represented North Texas in a positive light.
In inarguably the highest profile fight of the weekend, Fort Worth’s Kendrick Releford was outgunned and outmuscled in losing via seventh round stoppage to heavyweight contender Chris Arreola this past Friday. The bout was aired live on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights.” Releford was game but ultimately could not withstand the punishment of a surging Arreola.
On Saturday down in Temple, TX, on a considerably smaller stage, Fort Worth’s Anita Rodriguez pinned a loss on touted Yvette MCullar via a unanimous decision. Rodriguez is one of the region’s best kept secrets as the diminutive fighter has been making noise in the world of MMA and now fighting out of Phalanx MMA Academy’s hyper-talented fight team, it won’t be long before more fight fans stand up and pay attention.
Another “Funkytown” native fighting on the same card was Rafael Richards who was stopped in three on the undercard. Richards, a former talented amateur boxer, was making his professional debut.
