Saturday night, at the Softball Country Arena in Denver, Colorado, Roberto Marroquin (20-1, 14KO’s), defeated Jose Angel Beranza (33-21-2, 26KO’s) despite having a right swollen eye that was visibly noticeable at the end of the fight.
Marroquin was able to control the fight early and put his opponent on the canvas several times, but the tough Beranza was able to hang on to the end. Apparently, Beranza also had trouble keeping his mouthpiece in and a point was also taken away. Toward the end of the fight, Beranza gave it his best shot to try to make a comeback but it was too late. By this time, Marroquin was clearly ahead on the cards.
The cards read 78-71, 78-71, 79-70, a clear unanimous decision for the young featherweight from Dallas, Texas. It was apparent that he came into this fight in great shape, with the help of his new trainer, Paul Reyes. Expect to hear good things from this Top Rank featherweight in the upcoming months.
