Saul (“el Canelo”) Alvarez, WBC Light Middleweight Champion going after Austin Trout’s WBA Light Middleweight belt at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

In March of 2011, Alvarez (41-0, 30KO’s) defeated England’s Matthew Hatton (43-7, 17KO’s) by unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC Super Middleweight title.  Since then, he has defended his title five times and won four of those fights by knockout.  He is already a superstar in Mexico and on his way to becoming a superstar in boxing all around the world.  He is only 22 years old and in his press conference in San Antonio, Texas, he had an estimated 14,000 fans that came out to see him. 

Unlike other fighters in boxing who evade the best in their divisions, Alvarez is willing to take on the best in their prime.  And on April 20, 2013, he will be taking on undefeated middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0,14KO’s) for his WBA belt and to defend his own WBC belt.

Austin Trout won his belt in February of 2011 and he has defended it four times and in his last fight, he defeated an aging Miguel Cotto (37-4,30KO’s).  The southpaw Trout is known for his speed and quickness in the ring, and some are saying this will give him a huge advantage.  But quickness and speed does not win a fight by itself.  And against the younger and stronger Canelo, Trout will have his hands full.

Just like many of the great Mexican fighters before him, Canelo is a grinder, and although Trout may start out fast, he will be grinded at the end.  Canelo’s style is to go twelve rounds by pounding his opponents to the body and the head, counter punching, and eventually pounding them to the canvas.  The undefeated Canelo, from Juanacatlan, Jalisco, Mexico doesn’t have 30 knockouts on his record for nothing. 

It is hard to believe that he started his professional boxing career in 2005 and that he is only 22 years old.  He is just beginning his championship years as a professional and is on his way to becoming one of Mexico’s greatest champions.  He is not all about money, like some of the boxers out there, he wants to be the people’s champion.  That is why he is the one who came up with the idea of making $10.00 the minimum charge for a ticket to see him.  What a great idea from such a young champion.  That is why he will probably sell out the Alamodome and give the people a chance to go to the fight and see history.
