Dallas’ Sean Spencer knew he would have an uphill battle heading into his Sunday bout against Cathal Pendred in Boston. Despite being the betting favorite and establishing himself as a viable prospect in the UFC welterweight division, Spencer was matched as the clear B-side to Pendred who not only was riding the Connor McGregor coattails behind the “Irish Invasion” of Boston, but Pendred was actually born in Boston. Spencer had no illusions about the challenge he would face in fighting a fighter who had over 90% of the pro-Irish fight crowd rooting to see him beat the kid from Texas.
Face with these odds Spencer put on a virtuoso performance using his boxing skill and speed advantage to pepper Pendred’s face with a variety of punches. There were times when the much larger Pendred seemed stuck in quicksand and save for a couple of takedowns that produced nothing but a near submission and a few leg kicks, it appeared by nearly every observer that Spencer would take the three round decision in easy fashion.
Then, the scorecards were read….
In what many, including myself, have deemed one of the most egregious robberies in UFC history the three judges cage side unbelievably scored the fight in favor of Pendred. It was such a despicable decision that both Joe Rogan and UFC President Dana White were forced to acknowledge the travesty in the hype segment preceding the night’s main card.
“I don’t know what to say because I just saw somebody get robbed,” stated a clearly flustered Joe Rogan.
White agreed stating, “”I agree with that. … I know we’re in Boston and everything, but that was a bad one.”
Spencer and his team are crestfallen and Spencer has gone on Twitter making a case for a rematch against Pendred in Dallas. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Pendred to agree to such a fight.
The UFC needs to right this wrong to Spencer, and it’s probably likely that the UFC brass will take care of Spencer, but damn something needs to be done about this inept judging. The inability to impartially view a fight cost Spencer a much deserved victory and that is not fair to him, or the sport of MMA.
