Saturday June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in front of a crowd of 12,157, Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KO’s) defended his lineal WBC middleweight championship belt against Australian underdog Daniel Geale (31-4, 16 KO’s). From the opening bell Cotto had complete control of the bout. He was the quicker, stronger, and a more accurate fighter throughout the fight. Geale was a bumbling man and could barely land anything of meaning against Cotto. No doubt the contracted catch weight of 157 lbs., 3 less than the usual middleweight limit of 160 lbs. took a huge toll on Geale’s body. In the 4th round, Cotto was continuing his onslaught and eventually landing his signature left hook right on the chin of Geale, knocking him down. While Geale was able to beat the count it was obvious he never recovered and was quickly dropped again by a right hook from Cotto ending Geale’s night. Cotto earned a TKO victory 1:28 into the 4th round, successfully defending his WBC middleweight championship belt and improving his championship record. Cotto gave credit to his new legendary trainer Freddie Roach for his resurgence in boxing. With Cotto’s victory Saturday, it sets up a huge possible showdown with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO’s), which could possibly be held at the Cowboy Stadium. This could be the biggest fight in boxing now that Mayweather-Pacquiao has finally happened and it would be a much more action packed fight for all to enjoy.
