In a late development just about an hour and a half or so before tip off, Bill Koch reported that Yancy Gates, the Bearcats second leading scorer and leading rebounder, didn’t make the trip to Pittsburgh and has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Koch also reported that Gates and Mick Cronin will meet back in Cincinnati to determine his fate.
Obviously, this is a crushing blow for the Bearcats chances today at Pitt. If the big man is suspended for 2 games, and misses the trip to DePaul, that wouldn’t be so terrible, because hey, it’s DePaul. Digging deeper, it’s a bad sign. Yancy Gates is the most talented Bearcat, and is a big key to this team winning consistently. If he’s out for an extended period, we could be in for some rough times. Like today for instance. This a huge game for UC, and if Gates got suspended and didn’t make the trip, he fucked up big time. More on this as it develops.
