Andrew Gross at Rangers Rants wonders if the Rangers might be interested in some Capital players that may be available in a trade…
“But there’s been on-and-off chatter that the Capitals might try to deal Alex Semin ($6.7 million against the salary cap for next season before becoming a UFA). It would make sense for the Rangers to kick the tires there if the Capitals do put out signals that he’s available. Two seasons ago he had 40 goals and 44 assists (very similar to Gaborik’s 42-44 that season) and he’s still only 27. However, Semin certainly does not bring much of a physical presence and, to most Rangers followers, he’ll never get past the stigma of his “slap fight” against Marc Staal on Jan. 3, 2009.
Here’s another thought: Would GM Glen Sather be willing to entertain thoughts of trying to acquire Backstrom, who doesn’t turn 24 until November and is a No. 1 center, despite a contract that carries a $6.7 million cap hit through 2020. There’s been no indication the Capitals are looking to move Ovechkin’s pivot but it seems clear now that the Capitals need to change their chemistry.”
And of course if the Rangers can get Semin, he can play the bongos on Marc Staal whenever he wants…
…nice work by Gross thinking outside the box a little bit here. Both players have their obvious drawbacks (Backstrom’s contract ends in 2020? WTF?), but the Rangers need some legit scoring power or a #1 center and these guys would provide that.
…they wouldn’t come cheap either. Think Dubi or Cally, McD and maybe Kreider. Although with the way Sather is able to make trades maybe they can send back just Drury. 😉
…thoughts?
