Draft Profile: Nicklas Jensen

In my fifth installment of prospects I’d like to see the Rangers (#15) draft on June 24th, I take a look at LW/RW Nicklas Jensen who had 29g, 29a with the Oshawa Generals last season.

The 6′ 2″ Jensen is said to be a project but he has all the tools to be a high scoring winger in the NHL. The Denmark native is agile and elusive which allows him to make tight turns and shake opposing defenders. He has a fast release on a bullet wrister and he can pick the corners with it. He also plays a chippy, physical game.

On the negative side he is considered to be maddeningly inconsistent and notorious for taking shifts off. At just 186 pounds Jensen still needs to fill out and may be the reason for his consistency issues. He is also seen as a wild card in the draft as he has the potential to be a 30 goals scorer in the NHL or a complete bust.

Here’s Central Scouting’s report on Jensen…

“Nicklas has adjusted very well to the OHL. His puck-handling and play-making ability are excellent. He has an excellent wrist shot that he gets off quickly.”

Oshawa head coach Chris Dipiero adds this…

“He’s starting to take off, certainly after Christmas, after he returned from the World Junior B pool and spending some time at home, since he’s been back he’s been on fire. It’s renewed confidence for him. He’s proving that the accolades coming his way are well deserved. They feed off each other (Lucas Lessio, Andy Andreoff and Nicklas Jensen). It’s not the pretty passing plays, it’s the little touch passes. They utilize their size and their quickness. Their puck protection is excellent. … They have a chemistry, the three of them. It’s been kind of neat.”
