Staal to Play in Winter Classic

Dan Rosen at NHL.com reports that Staal will be paired with Bickel. No word on who will be scratched.

Steve Zipay reports that Staal will in fact play in the Winter Classic this afternoon.

Zipay adds that John Tortorella said he got approvals from doctor, trainer and Staal last night. Staal will play on 3rd pair.

…i’m in complete shock. The good kind.

Dave Lozo at NHL.com says it’s very possible John Tortorella will announce at 12:45 p.m. press conference that Staal is playing.

Update, 12:15 p.m.:
Nick Montemagno at Rangers Tribune (who is at Winter Classic) says Rangers will hold unexpected press conference at 12:45 p.m.
