Rangers Like Gleason

Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that with Ryan McDonagh going down on Saturday, along with the injuries to Michael Sauer, Steve Eminger and Jeff Woywitka the Rangers should be in the market for a defenseman and the Hurricanes Tim Gleason is a player the Blueshirts have always liked.

However, Brooks adds that there’s a question as whether he can skate well enough for John Tortorella.

The 29-year-old Gleason, who is in the final year of his contract that pays him $2.75 million this year, has 1g, 12a and is a +2 on the season.

…while Gleason is a good defenseman on a bad team, the Rangers need some offensive help on defense and this guy does not provide it. He also offers no assistance for the Rangers greatest deficiency which is the power play as Gleason has just two power play points this season.

Brooks goes on to say that Sheldon Souray, who’s had a renaissance in Dallas, and the Predator’s Ryan Suter should also be on the Rangers radar.

…Souray is an interesting option as he has an absolute bomb from the point and is in the final year if his contract that pays him $1.65 million this season. He has five power play points (2g, 3a). With Dallas slipping out of the Western playoff race, the Rangers should be able to get Souray for some mid-round picks. May be worth a try.
