Lots of Trade Deadline Options for the Rangers

Steve Zipay at Newsday feels that trade talk involving the Rangers will be picking up soon and that there are numerous players that have piqued their interest.

Zipay says that Columbus’ Vinny Prospal; Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne; Buffalo’s Derek Roy and Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu are among the names linked to the Rangers as they all could help the beleaguered power play.

Zipay notes that Prospal could be had on the cheap while players like Roy and Ruutu would cost a player, a prospect and a pick. Selanne would have to waive his no-trade clause before any trade is approved.

…while Roy (9g, 16a, -11) & Ruutu (15g, 11a, -1) are solid players, I’m not sure they’re worth giving up as much as Zipay thinks. Especially with Ruutu likely just a rental being in the final year of his contract ($3.8 million this season) and Roy, a former 30-goal scorer, looking like he hasn’t fully healed from his torn quad tendon last year.

According to Zipay, on defense, the names of Lubomir Visnovky, Sheldon Souray and Tim Gleason have been floated. Zipay points out that Visnovsky (5g, 12a) carries a $5.2 million salary and Souray’s ship has sailed.

As previously posted on this blog, Zipay says Tortorella likes Gleason.

…i know it’s crazy to say, but of the guys mentioned I think Souray would be the best fit financially (final year of contract, $1.65 million) and personnel wise (2g, 3a on the power play and one hell of a shot). Plus I think the Rangers could get him for just a couple of picks.

In other trade news, Bob McKenzie at TSN floated the idea of Dallas’ Brenden Morrow possibly being on the trade market.

Morrow has 8g, 14a on the season and has two years left on his contract at $4.1 million per.

…Morrow could be interesting as he bring a lot of experience as well as familiarity with Richards. Shouldn’t cost that much to get him.
