Henrik Lundqvist only needed to make 13 saves for his 30th win of the year, but that win extended his NHL record to seven 30 win seasons to start a career. And he clinched that win this this sick glove save on Kovalchuk…
Here’s Lundqvist on the significance of adding to his record (via Bergen Record)…
“I remember my first year, it was a big deal to reach it, now it’s my seventh year,” Lundqvist said. “It means a lot. It means things are going well and it means I’m playing for a club that gives me the opportunity to play a lot. I want to improve each year. So far, it’s good.”
Before last night’s game Marty Brodeur acknowledged that Lundqvist should win the Vezina Trophy this season…
“I haven’t looked at the other goalies (in West), but on our side by far I think he should get it.”
Brodeur then gave Lundqvist a back-handed compliment by saying Lundqvist has benefitted from the structure the Rangers have put in defensively this season.
…talk about the pot calling the kettle black. 100% of Brodeur’s success was due to the Devils trap system in the late 90s and early 2000s. Funny how his game has slipped post lockout. No way he sniffs a Vezina without the trap.
…meanwhile Lundqvist has been a Vezina candidate behind some very poor defenses during his seven year career. Product of the Rangers defensive system? I think not.
