Larry Brooks at the New York Post echoes what I posted about Chris Kreider on the blog yesterday, that he’ll be leaving Boston College when their season is over.
Glen Sather responded “absolutely” when Brooks asked him if he expects Kreider to leave BC after this his junior year.
Brooks then asked if the Rangers intend/expect to sign Kreider in time for him to play this season, to which Sather repeated “absolutely.”
Brooks adds that if the Rangers do sign Kreider, the first year of his three-year Entry Level contract would be used regardless of whether he plays a single game for the Rangers or even is placed on the NHL roster.
The NCAA regionals are set for March 23-25. The Frozen Four will be played April 5-7, the same weekend the NHL regular-season ends, but a week before the AHL season concludes.
…how well Boston College does in the NCAA tournament will have a major impact on the Rangers decision making when it comes to Kreider this spring. If BC gets bounced early the Rangers can sign Kreider to an amateur try-out contract and send him to the Whale for two weeks to get his feet wet in the pro game. And then, depending on how he plays, possibly bring him up for the playoffs. However, if BC makes it to the Final Four, there won’t be enough time to get him some regular season games with the Whale. Sather will then have to decide whether to put him on the NHL playoff roster with no pro experience or just send him down to the Whale for their playoffs to get himself ready for camp next season. Tough decisions all around.
