The great Katie Baker at Grantland takes a look at Henrik Lundqvist’s unique way of stopping the puck with his noggin.
Here’s Lundqvist on the Rangers organization’s feeling towards his unusual talent…
“Oh, they hate it, they hate it. They’ve told me a bunch of times not to do it. But I’ve always been doing it.”
Baker adds that Lundqvist has been doing this since he was 15-years-old because he doesn’t want to cover his eyes with his glove trying to catch it.
Lundqvist says the way he keeps from hurting himself is to head it backwards instead of forwards which keeps his head safe from taking the full brunt of the puck.
…got to admit, I cringe every time he does this, but, to be honest, his reasoning for doing it actually makes a lot of sense. And you can’t really complain about the results as he eems to have perfected the execution.
