2013 NFL Draft: Week 4 Injury Report for Draft Prospects

Montee BallIt’s great to see a weekend with few injuries, with no season ending injures this weekend and more news related to recoveries and minor injuries than anything serious.

Giovani Bernard makes a rebound, William Gholston might have been injured, and only a handful of concerns for Week 5.

Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech (JR)
-While his injury may not impact his future as a quarterback this season or the future, it’s gruesome enough that it’s worth at least discussing. According to Andy Bitter, Virginia Tech beat writer, Logan Thomas lost his finger nail on a redzone carry this weekend. Thomas said it was “one of the worst pains I’ve ever felt. [Blood] was just squirting. All you could see was the meat underneath my finger nail and blood covering it.”

Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina (RS Soph)
-After suffering a knee injury in the team’s first game against Elon, Bernard returned this week and got a handful of carries in the team’s game against East Carolina. He’ll look to get back to full health and back to full production as the weeks continue.

Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
-An injury suffered early in the game, Ball left (and did not return) with a head injury. If it is a concussion, it’ll be the third one he’s suffered in under a year, including his injuries suffered after a host of people attacked him before this season. It’s unclear if he’ll miss time, but concussion history is a serious concern for NFL teams.

Trey Burton, TE (JR), Sharrif Floyd, DT (JR) Florida
-Trey Burton, who is more of an “athlete” than a tight end, missed the Kentucky game with a “sudden case of back spasms” on Friday. His role in the offense has become a unique adaptation to keep this unite versatile, and ideally they’d like to use him in 7-10 plays. As for Sharrif Floyd, he left early with a shoulder injury, but head coach Will Muschamp “everything should be fine”.

Elvis Fisher, OT, Missouri
-After dealing with an injury all last year, the last thing Elvis Fisher and the Missouri Tigers want is a complication. After he injured his MCL in the loss against Georgia, Fisher announced via twitter that missing the trip to South Carolina would be the “1st time not travelling in 5 years.”. It’s a tough loss for a team that needs his protection as well as tough for him to try and overcome injury history to still be looked highly by NFL teams.

Will Gholston, DE, Michigan State (JR)

-Gholston didn’t’ play the entire first half of the team’s game this past weekend thanks to not practicing fully during the week. There still is a possibility he missed the first half of action thanks to a non-injury reason, but as long as he comes back healthy next week, his injury concerns will go away.

CJ Barnett, S, Ohio State (JR)

Barnett missed the team’s game against UAB with a sprained ankle suffered before the game. Among the better junior safeties in college football, the Ohio State secondary sorely missed Barnett. It’s unlikely he misses much more time or it affects his 2014 (unlikely to declare early) Draft stock in the future.
